Stopping the collection. Used up last of COMC credit, and picked up cards from the only two historical sets I wanted, along with the T206. 1952 Topps, and a 1934 Goudey cards of Cubs players. Finished off the 2016 Cubs licensed autos also. Still 1 short for 2015 Topps Update Retail Throwback Variations Last card to finish off the 2015 Topps Update Retail Throwback variations. Only card on eBay was nearly $30. I got this on Sportlots for $3 or 4.
With a little help from the Blowout forum I think I have the mystery game from the Trammell card solved. User Packbusta pointed out that Trammel showed a CS on Gary Gaetti on 7/30/95. He also showed a CS on Tom Goodwin who would wear sleeves like the Royals player has on in this card. You can also see what look like players on the bench behind Trammell. This would make sense with how the bullpens were at Kaufmann Stadium and the angle from first base photo pit>second base>bullpen alignment.
I looked back at my cards even closer to try to match up players and box scores when I saw the answer staring right back at me. There is no way this Greg Gagne card is from Tiger Stadium. That is Kaufmann Stadium with the grass up above the fence.
Additional evidence can be seen in this Wally Joyner pic in which you can tell that is Tiger Stadium in the background, confirming they played with these jerseys on the road. The Gagne confirms they likely played in the Road jersey at home also.
I also jumped on COMC and looked at more cards and found on the backs of Upper Deck Collector's Choice cards of Felipe Lira and Joe Boever, both players in Stars Home Pinstripes. Neither of these guys pitched on July 8, 1995, but did pitch the July 30, 1995 game at Kansas City.
Looks like I have an unidentified Throwback Game between the Tigers and Royals, playing as the Stars and Monarchs. This 1997 Pinnacle Alan Trammell I thought went with the 1996 Throwback game the Tigers would have put on. As I've been updating my pages and Blowout forums pages I've come to 1996. So I lined this up. It was then I noticed there is no Tigers and Royals throwback game in 1996. I thought, maybe it is a photo from the 1995 game. The Royals wore red-sleeved 1925 K.C. Monarchs jerseys with the black heart patch on the side. One problem with the 1995 theory is Alan Trammel didn't play in the July 8, 1995 game. He played on the 6th, 7th, and 9th, but not the 8th. Now it is possible that these uniforms were worn on multiple games that weekend, but I cannot confirm that.
So we can rule out 1995, if it was a single game, and the 1996 game was against the Yankees. Todd Peterson in The Negro Leagues were Major Leagues, has listed an August 24th, 1996 game with Detroit as the Stars playing the Royals at the Monarchs, but at K.C. Trammel again was not in that ballgame according to Baseball-reference.com. Royal Heritage has listed a game on July 30, 1995 with the Tigers on the road against the Royals. He has the Royals playing in White Pinstripe 1924 Monarchs jerseys. These jerseys lack the red sleeves as seen on the Trammel card. Trammel also retired at end of 1996, so this isn't the 1997 game represented on the 1997 Pinnacle card. I think for sure there is a game missing between these two teams in Negro League Throwbacks in either 1995 or 1996. |
