We are on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the first Throwback Game. July 11th, 1990 the Chicago White Sox donned uniforms based on the 1917 Chicago White Sox. This was to honor the final year of games played at Comiskey Park. I will also hopefully get up a Video on YT covering this. These are presented in reverse Chronological Order. 1. 1911 Cincinnati Reds Home Uniform2. 1946 San Francisco Sea Lions Road UniformShort tracking post here for a rash decision to try for a 2011 Topps Trevor Cahill "Rainbow". He also has an Opening Day card, and Triple Threads auto cards with the exact same picture. I loaded up a bunch of cards on comc.com, and snagged the following:
I'm sure I missed more cards, but have dug back through my old boxes just looking to see what I may have missed since the last time. I have 3 stacks of cards that I may do a video on about what can be lost in the boxes when one doesn't keep up with the hobby. I decided to pull together all the duplicates of throwbacks I have so have been pulling those out of the old boxes I had. I was going through 2011 Topps, hoping maybe I missed a Trout, when I came upon this duplicate of Trevor Cahill in the throwback Oakland A's jersey. I was also checking back through all the teeny-tiny codes on the back when I noticed the Cahill was different. I flipped it over, looked it over and noticed the sparkle that I missed at least twice after going through these cards. I also found a Gold to go with it. So I have the base, sparkle and gold versions now.
I was looking at the throwback games from 1992 and trying to see if there were cards for all of them. I am noodling over a video about Throwback games, and would start with maybe 90-95, or maybe only the first 2-3 years. I didn't have anything on my sheet for the Cubs game in 1992 against the Phillies. The Phillies however have a few cards from that game. I got on comc.com and started going through every 1993 Cubs card listed. I finally found one single card. A Rey Sanchez from the 1993 Stadium Club Teams Sets. I knew my mother had gotten a bunch of different sets for Christmas, and thought for sure there had to be a Cubs team set in there. I found one box, nothing. Finally happened to run across one box on the bottom of multiple others, filled with different team sets. Thankfully there were a few Cubs Teams Sets in there, so I didn't have to resort to eBay/comc.com to get it. My final card showed up today via eBay. I am not a fan of the non-licensed stuff, so I normally don't pick them up. The one exception I have is when they included game-used Throwback jerseys. I think I was just doing a random scrolling through of "auto" search on eBay and ran across the Austin Jackson card. It instantly stuck out to me with the patch being single colored. Amazingly this 2016 National Treasures set had card with the actual game date listed on the card. I looked it up, and sure enough this was from a Throwback game between the Tigers and the Rays. Best I can tell this is part of the "C" and the "K" from the name on back (the swatch is flipped upside down). The other card stuck out to me as it was a grey jersey with pinstripe of Yelich. Brewers do not have a pinstriped grey jersey, unless you scroll through uniform-lineup.com Brewers page and see they wore the Negro League throwbacks in 2018. It was a road game at Pittsburgh. I am 99% sure this is a jersey swatch from that game.
Corona-chan has been in full force now for about 2 weeks here. No baseball, and I'm engaging in what I refer to as not just "social distancing", but "anti-social distancing". Basically maintaining about 6 miles between others. It has allowed me to go back through some of my boxes just to see what may be hidden in there. I've found quite a few doubles of ones I had already pulled out, but figured I'd set them aside as duplicates in case others may need them. I did manage to find this 1993 SP Rod Beck with pic on the reverse. He is wearing the San Francisco Seals minor league jersey. Latest mail pickups are these 2020 SP cards with Juan Soto, Anthony Rendon and Max Scherzer in these great Powder Blue Montreal Expos jerseys. The other 2020 SP is the Joey Votto in those sweet 1956 vests, sans sleeves. Another mail addition was this stunning Nick Senzel 1984 design from 2019 Update Series. This uniform goes in my Top 10 for best Throwback Uniforms to appear on a card. 2020 Topps Opening Day also released and besides the Aristedes Aquino in the same pic as the flagship series, Freddie Freeman is rocking those amazing 1974 Atlanta Braves home white jerseys. Have some Gypsy Queen coming soon as the opening I have seen of those look like some excellent Throwback pics in there including a Mike Trout.
The below 3 cards are from 1993 sets of Upper Deck and Score. Damion Easley and Chuck Finley appear to be wearing 1960's California Angels throwback jerseys. There is a record from August 16, 1992 of the Angels wearing Road Grey against the Oakland Athletics, who were wearing 1968 Home Athletics Vests.
Chuck Finley did pitch in the August 16th game, as well as home games on:
Another look at the two Easley cards show a green fence, and as you can see below in 1992 Angel Stadium had blue fences. Possibly the Easley cards are from the Oakland game and the Road Grey jerseys show just extremely light. The example in Bill Henderson's tome certainly don't appear to be that light. The Bryan Harvey card doesn't appear to look that light either, but Occam's razor would seem to say that is the case.
That still leaves the mystery of what game the Finley is from. It is obviously a white jersey. The fence is blue. It doesn't match the jersey from 1992 or 1993.
2020 Topps cards have hit the shelves, and the plethora of Reds throwback jerseys from last year are well represented. Other throwbacks were this 1969 Cubs Walk-off Team card, Phillies all blue alternates as well as their Cream colored alternates, Brewers alternates, White Sox alternates, and an Astros 1989-93 Rainbow sleeve. It is getting to the point I may rethink counting these alternates in my database and card collection. Way too many teams seem to have an alternate throwback in their uni rotation now.
Looking through all of my throwback cards I found this odd one. 1992 Fleer card of Carlton Fisk. The player in the background has a #19 on the helmet, with only the #1 showing on the front of his jersey. This card should be showing pictures from the 1991 season. The Orioles player is wearing what looks like home throwback uniforms from 1966. There is a record of the Orioles wearing 1966 throwbacks on June 19th, 1991 against the Twins. Shown below are cards with this throwback jersey on. From top left and across
The 1991 Orioles jersey, from the Game Used Guide, the Orioles script had an underline on it. So this jersey w/o the underline is likely the 1966 throwback. Similar font, but without the underline. A few details from the above cards
The Orioles did have this combination in 1988; elastic waistbands, Orange/White/Black piping on pants, but the collar had thicker stripes that the Fisk card doesn't appear to show. I would think it would be odd for a 1992 card to show a picture from 1988 though. If this is from 1988 Larry Sheets wore number 19 and batted from the left side. They also used that same batting helmet in 1988. The jersey Fisk has on does appear to be the 1987-1990 Road Jersey. Grey with the red outline of navy, and the numbers on the left leg. You can just make out the bottom left corner of the "2" next to his glove. A mystery game from 1991 of the Orioles wearing their 1966 throwback uniforms against the White Sox is not as it initially appears. Fleer decided to use a minimum 3 year old picture to represent Carlton Fisk from the 1991 season.
Chicago Cubs are at the Chicago White Sox today playing in 1959 Throwback jerseys. The game is to honor the passing of two Chicago baseball legends from earlier in 2015. Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub, passed away on January 23rd and Minnie Minoso on March 1st. This is a "companion" game to the July 12th game at Wrigley Field in which 1958 Home/Away uniforms were worn by the corresponding teams.
One of the best Sox uniforms from the past and certainly a better road jersey for the Cubs than their current options. Have to give a completely biased "Go Cubs!"
